Spain
Spain has had a somewhat chequered history of private education. Today, however, a growing number of children are enrolled in non- state schools nationwide. The Spanish system traditionally favoured Catholic schools, but the post-Franco secular state offers few privileges now to these schools.
Private education remains the preferred option for many middle- class parents with bilingual or openly anglophone schools being seen as the benchmark for the private sector. There has been a marked growth in these schools which now provide for the needs of local Spanish pupils as much as for the expatriate children who motivated their formation.
The needs of the growing expatriate community, coupled with the aspirations of the local population, have together created a vibrant market for quality private education provision. Prospective purchasers who are seeking a lifestyle change but still want to continue in the education field would do well to consider the opportunities in this country.
